Negative case analysis asks a simple but demanding question: what in the material does not fit the emerging explanation? It is not a search for errors or a requirement that every project produce a dramatic contradiction. It is a disciplined way to test whether a pattern is too broad, too neat, or insufficiently attentive to variation.

What counts as a negative case?

A negative case may be an explicit contradiction, an exception, an absence where evidence was expected, or a case that fits only after the explanation is refined. For example, a theme about the usefulness of an educational technology may include a participant who values the tool but rejects its use for direct answers. That is not a nuisance. It can clarify the boundary between acceptable support and unacceptable substitution.

Do not confuse rarity with irrelevance

Frequency can help describe coding distribution, but it does not settle analytical importance. A single well-contextualised case may challenge an assumption, expose a different experience, or show that a code definition is too narrow. Conversely, an isolated statement may remain an outlier that should be reported with appropriate caution rather than elevated into a general conclusion.

A practical negative-case routine

  1. Write the emerging claim in one sentence.
  2. Retrieve evidence for the relevant codes, including less frequent and ambiguous segments.
  3. Ask what would count as evidence against the claim.
  4. Examine whether the claim needs a boundary, qualification, split, or alternative explanation.
  5. Keep a memo showing what was reviewed and how the conclusion changed.

How to report it

Write the dominant pattern first, then state the qualifying evidence precisely. Avoid treating a negative case as statistical proof of a subgroup difference unless the study design supports that claim. A strong qualitative finding can say: “Most participants described X; however, several accounts framed X as conditional on Y.” The evidence should make the condition visible.

Does every theme need a negative case?

No. The task is to search seriously for disconfirming or qualifying material, not to manufacture contrast.

Should I delete a code that has only one segment?

Not automatically. Review whether it identifies a meaningful, bounded phenomenon or whether it is better represented as a memo, subcode, or qualification of another code.
